This is a small example about how to use VLC media player to create a mosaic. What we basically want is a video mosaic mixing 3 video channels (channels 1, 2 and 3) on a background image (background.png) and streaming the resulting video on the network. An image is the easiest way to have a background that can be played as long as necessary. The image should be the same size as the video you want to create. Many image formats are supported (JPEG, PNG …).
It is also possible to use a video as a background for the mosaic, and superimpose other videos.
The frame rate of the background video or image will be the frame rate of the mosaic video. This is important since the default frame rate for image files is 10fps.

How to merge multiple videos to a new one in VLC?
VLC is a cross-platform media player. It's compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and some others. This guide was carried out on Windows 7.
Step 1: Download VLC.
- Visit VLC download site: videolan.org.
- Choose an edition that matches your operation system.
- Click to download the setup file.
Step 2: Install VLC.

Step 3. Change portrait videos to landscape

You might have found some videos that you recorded from smartphone are in portrait orientation while played back with VLC on computer. In this case, you may need to rotate the portrait video to landscape.
However, the rotation feature in VLC is conceal and not expressed as 'Rotate'. You need to go to: Tools -> Effects and Filters -> Video Effects -> Geometry -> Tick Transform -> choose your degrees of rotation.

Step 4. Convert videos using VLC.
Note: VLC can NOT merge videos unless they are in the same format. If your video clips are encoded in different formats, follow these steps.
- Launch VLC.
- Select 'Media' on the main toolbar.
- Click 'Open Multiple Files'.
- Add video clips by clicking '+ Add' as shown below.
- Unfold the 'Play' button and select 'Convert'.
- Select a profile i.e. Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4).
- Click 'Start' button to run video converting process.
Step 5. Merge videos with command-line feature.
- Rename your (converted) videos as simple as possible, such as 1.mp4.
- Move these videos to a new folder.
- Hold 'Shift' and right click on the new folder.
- Select 'Open command window here'.
- Type the following command and press 'Enter'.
- VLC will begin merging your videos.
